The Day Time Stood Still: A Shocking Encounter

It’s been exactly one year, but the horrific incident still replays in my mind as if it happened just yesterday. This is a story I feel compelled to share, a story of how a seemingly ordinary day took a shocking turn right before my eyes.

Picture this: I had just left a shop not far from my home with a brand-new pair of shoes in hand. I was preparing for an event scheduled for the following day, and these shoes were the final piece of my outfit puzzle. Little did I know that this shopping trip would turn into a life-altering experience.

As I stepped out of the shop, a commercial tricycle, or what we commonly refer to as “Keke NAPEP” in Nigeria, came to a halt right in front of me. Inside the tricycle were two individuals — the driver and a passenger. What happened next was beyond belief.

Suddenly, both the rider and the passenger disembarked from the tricycle, and before I could grasp the situation, they were engaged in a physical altercation. The reason? The passenger had paid an incomplete fare to the rider, sparking a heated dispute. Both men appeared to be in their mid-thirties, and their fight quickly drew a crowd.

While a gathering formed to witness the brawl, only a handful attempted to intervene and stop the escalating violence. It was a peculiar sight — two grown men, throwing punches on the street while a growing audience watched in awe, or maybe excitement.

As the scuffle continued, it became evident that the passenger had the upper hand. In a moment of desperation, the rider decided to retreat, attempting to put some distance between himself and his adversary. The onlookers couldn’t help but mock the rider for initiating the fight only to flee when the tides turned against him.

However, fate had a cruel twist in store. In an unexpected turn of events, the rider summoned his courage and returned to confront the passenger once more. With a forceful blow to the chest, he caught the passenger off guard. The unexpected punch sent the passenger tumbling backward, and the sickening sound of his skull hitting the tarred road echoed through the air.

A collective gasp of horror swept through the crowd as we watched the passenger fall, unable to prevent the tragedy unfolding before us. The scene turned chaotic as the passenger began to convulse, struggling for breath. His eyes rolled backward, white with fear and pain. Then, silence.

In the midst of pandemonium, the rider, who had initially contemplated fleeing, found himself held captive by the crowd, his fate now entwined with that of his fallen passenger. The scorching sun bore witness to the lifeless body lying on the unforgiving pavement.

In a country where access to emergency medical services is a luxury for many, the police were summoned to the scene. As I walked away from the unfolding tragedy, I couldn’t help but steal a glance at the rider. His face, etched with shock and regret, left me wondering about the thoughts racing through his mind.

The memory of that fateful day still haunts me, a stark reminder of how fragile life can be. In a matter of moments, someone can be brimming with vitality, and the next, they lie motionless on the ground. It’s a chilling reminder of life’s unpredictability.

Meanwhile, the passenger had been en route to deliver a parcel, hastily ending a phone call to engage in a dispute that would prove fatal. Just five minutes later, he lay still on the pavement, his phone lying beside him, still ringing. We watched as the world continued to spin, oblivious to the tragedy that had unfolded.
